Sham Rain - Goodbay To All That

Goodbye To All That

Finnish rockers SHAMRAIN’s third album was an album forged from blood, sweat, and tears. The band has admitted that this was a difficult CD to record; the studio was the site of numerous “disagreements” and a whole lot of “despair”. Fortunately, the band can firmly say “Goodbye To All That”, as the end result appears to be quite worth the struggle.
SHAMRAIN has always been a particularly mellow band, drawing much of their influence from THE CURE, but on “Goodbye To All That”, they’ve also chosen to incorporate a heavier Rock sound into their music, and it certainly works in their favour. You can hear traces of bands like RADIOHEAD and THE PORCUPINE TREE on the new album, thus giving it a bit more of an Alternative flavour. Just listen to the first two songs, “Holding The Earth” and “Raindrops”, to see how flawlessly SHAMRAIN manages to pull this off. “Evangeline”, with its stirring keyboard work, is another standout track.
Naturally, you would expect a band whose goal is to be mellow to kind of get…boring after a few tracks. Sadly, it seems SHAMRAIN couldn’t break free of this particular convention; too many of the songs just sound similar. A little variety would be nice, but all songs have the same slow beat and lazy guitar. They’re usually well-written, of course, but it gets tiresome after a while.
Overall, “Goodbye To All That” is a very decent album, and one I would recommend to fans of mellow Brit-Rock. Just be prepared to deal with a few filler tracks that blend together. As a wise man once said, it’s not all good, but it’s mostly good. Good enough for a purchase, methinks.
