The Rosebuds have a unique vibe around them. Their music combines 90's dream pop with an 80's techno pop estetic to create something both moody and uplifting.
Their new album Life Like (to be released Oct. 7th) is no exception.
The album features ten tracks of morosely beautiful music, spiced with an indie dance rock groove. The male/female vocal interaction between Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp gives warmth to the songs, while the cascading instrumentation envelopes the listener in a coccoon of indie bliss.
Crisp in particular does a remarkable job. Close your eyes and one can actually feel her effortlessly channelling Siouxsie Sioux on "Cape Fear".
Other than the destined-to-be-an-indie-dance-hit "Bow To the Middle", you won't find a ton of blatantly danceable numbers. But I don't think anyone other than the most diehard fans of "Get Up Get Out" will mind.
And yes, "Hello Darling" does pay homage to the Conway Twitty classic before transforming into a whistle-accompanied instrumental which will be stuck in your head as you work.
Life Like has an irresistable quality to it. It's the sound of a band at the peak of its creative output.
