Cemeteries - Speaking Horrors

Cemeteries is the moniker Buffalo, New York resident Kyle Reigle goes by when he’s scoring the next psychological dream film that going to blow Hollywood’s mind. At least, that’s what I hope he’s doing.
“Speaking Horrors” is a self-recorded, self-released ten song collection about ghosts “both literally and figuratively”. The album creates lush soundscapes filled with dreamy vocals, reverb, and poppy guitar and piano riffs. A mix of folk, shoegaze, and electronic music Cemeteries is nothing if not pleasant to listen to. Opening track “Watch the skies or Walking Home, October 31st” possesses not only an aptly beautiful title, but instructs the listener on what to do while listening. Having discovered this album on Halloween last year, I did just that, and here’s what I wrote when I got home after listening through half the album and sitting on porch couch to listen to the rest before going in.
“Speaking Horrors” kicks off with some weird ambient noises. Wolves howling, wind, crickets, and after almost a minute a faint piano note rings. The piano continues sparsely with what sound like almost random notes, only for the acoustic guitar to start strumming and tie all the sounds together. The delayed, echoey guitars and entire feel of the song reminds of Donnie Darko, in a good way. In a, “why wasn’t this song in Donnie Darko?” sort of way.
“Watch the Skies or Walking Home, October 31st” continues to keep you attentive with catchy vocal lines and a vibe that makes you feel good all over, until shit gets serious and the song hits the floor. At this point on my walk I stopped, stood, and listened – hooked. Surrounded by a dream world of sound, surrounded by all ages of people dressed in costume tricking and treating throughout Houghton.
The rest of the album continues to build worlds I would happily immerse myself into. Tracks 9 and 10 lose me a little, but up until 8 – solid.
